Easter brings another addition to Treviso: former NBA guard Charlie
Bell, who will result a key element in the final rush, while in May
another goal was achieved with the participation to the EuroLeague Final
Four.
In Italy, Benetton finished the regular season in second place; as the
playoffs started, Benetton swept Coop Nordest Trieste 3-0, and reached
the finals after a 3-1 win over Kinder Bologna in the semifinals. The
finals saw Benetton facing the other Bologna's team, Skipper Fortitudo,
beating them 3-0 with two games on the road in Bologna, at Paladozza.
June, 15, 2001: Benetton Basket wins the third Italian League Title in
team history, a perfect ending to 9 months of spectacular, exctiting
basketball, that captured the hearts of the Treviso fans. Following the
NBA - bound departments of Nachbar, Tskitishvili and coach D'Antoni, the
future begins all over with the arrival of Ettore Messina, one of the
greatest coaches in Europe symbolizing the new eve of Benetton Basket.
"Let's restart from 3", this is the slogan for Benetton Basket, ready to
launch the new challenge for the 2002/2003 season.
The 2002/03 season starts with a "repeat" as coach Ettore Messina wins
his first game against his former Virtus Bologna team to win the Italian
SuperCup in Genova. Bologna will eventually get his revenge by being the
first team to defeat Benetton Basket in the italian regular season but
without hurting the growing white-and-green leadership in Italy and in
the Euroleague as the Palaverde collected prestigious wins over Virtus
Roma, Skipper and MPS Siena as well as european powerhouses as
Barcelona, Tau and Maccabi...
